The first task of the day is to assemble tools and materials ready for the day’s operations and then deliver them to the actual site , courtesy of the gang’s wheelbarrow in this case |
The new fence to replace the dying privet hedge takes shape |
The posts and rails are painted with tar paint – Oh dear Robin, , best not to lean on it, it’s still wet! |
We try and re-use materials salvaged from other places if at all possible as in this case (with a judicious adjustment to paling lengths) speeds the work |
A coat of preservative black paint applied by Mark and Alan completes the job |
Phase 2 is completed: both ends of the crane jib have been shaped to fit the appropriate metal parts of the crane. When will we see it winched into place I wonder? |
Reflecting on a job: A new letter box for the Tenterden Station door is shaped |
Signage, keeping the public up to date with the latest events, is changed at Northiam by Robin |
Not all the Gang’s work is seen. Northiam station’s roof gets some overdue attention from Ron’s hammer |
Meanwhile below at floor level, attention to the doorframe paintwork has revealed rot and so some of the frame is replaced |
The replacement steps to the Tenterden offices, once installed in place, are thoroughly treated with good coats of paint to keep them in good order for some time to come |
meanwhile, a few paces down the line, the heavy latch fitting on the crossing gates needs some fine tuning before cementing in place |
Taking to the rails, if only on foot, Graham & Ron go in search of a defective line-side footpath gate for repair |
John studies the final stubborn paint spots on Northiam’s store and removes them with a hot air gun. Lovely job on a baking hot summer afternoon! |
Still time to watch the trains – Ray and Robin rest their tools for a few minutes break as the USA tank calls at Northiam where they are working |
The “boys” with the “”baby” – The Tuesday gang admire a railway visitor’s Austin 7 – all in lovely condition! |
Some paint begins to be reapplied to parts of the station building at Northiam, whilst cleaning off and rubbing down continues on other parts |
Whilst repairs continue to the adjoining shed doorway, paint is applied to the surrounding areas. Window frames and a sealed doorway need attention but that will come later |
Ron working against the clock to get the repairs on the doorway complete enough to leave it secure until our next visit |
The frontage beginning to look less forlorn although much still remains to be done |
Northiam staff cottage number 2 gets a lick or paint to the front door which it has been waiting months for since the prep work was done |
