1. In our Northiam HQ Matthew gets to grips with the painting of rows and rows of seating slats that have been prepared in readiness for restoring the platform seating at Northiam |
2. Before leaving Northiam we run a test run on re-assembling one of the seats to see how we should proceed with the other seat components |
3. Packing up kit and materials ready for the move to.... |
4. ... Wittersham Rd. Here we find that room is much more limited for our needs. However refreshments in the sunshine is still an option in October |
5. Meanwhile Ron is out with his rule and notebook working out how we are going to deal with the long neglected decay in the waiting room. These windows will have to be replaced for a start! |
6. We set to work. The roof is re-tarred, paintwork rubbed down and new timber “ex-changed” for rotten |
7. Replacement of some awkward timbers on the end of the “hut” is carried out, before the wood is thoroughly treated with best quality undercoat |
8. What a day to choose for Ron and Norm to fit the replacement window frames Ron has made! A rough and ready plastic sheet awning is devised so the work can proceed in the heavy rain and gale |
9. The Tuesday Gang outing! A special train is laid on to distribute the new mile posts specially constructed for the Railway by the “Bodiam team” |
10. The train is driven to the previously measured position for each individual post. Here we move on from Northiam station to find the yellow spray mark denoting the next post’s exact location |
11. The survey work and marking out had been done weeks before by Graham and Robin |
12. Ray and team returns to the Northiam base having been out “planting” posts in their correct location. A hole is dug (no easy task with all that ballast about) before the post is dropped in and the soil re-compacted about it |
13. Another post is now in its correct position. Marvellous! |
14. Meanwhile back at Wittersham Rd, winter is drawing on apace and shorts have disappeared and bobble hats appear once again. The second window frame is being fitted into place on Wittersham Rd Waiting room |
15.Both windows have now been re-glazed. Ron had to make new shutters and the first of these is fitted |
16. A busy scene with preparation and painting going on all around the railway crossing |
17 The rusty gates are cleaned up by Tom |
18. Others at work on those Witt Rd. crossing gates too |
19. Red rust gives way to red oxide paint as the preparation work eventually comes to an end |
20. Unfortunately the gate post is not quite in the correct position which has been causing signalling problems and thus must be moved. The “3/4” inch move takes a lot of work by Dave - 3 working days in all |
21. Adjacent work continues on painting gates and fencing |
22. Raise your glasses! The gang celebrates festively at Christmas another year of railway achievements and good friendships |
23. More fencing - more paint to brush on - but a sunny day today |
24. The side gate is repaired, a new post placed in position and work continues on the areas around it |
