Here we are gathered at Tenterden carrying out a number of different tasks. |
The yard crane at Tenterden Town station has been one of the tasks that has taken up many hours of work in the last quarter. Isambard Kingdom Alan, who did much of the preparatory work on the jib, poses after another session working on cleaning and painting the crane - now completed very smartly by Phil. |
Scaffolding has been erected round the Jib in order to clean and paint the business end of the jib. |
Areas of long-neglected cast iron require careful cleaning to remove moss, algae and flaked areas of rust before the application of paint - not a quick job! |
The gang enjoy another lovely summer's Tuesday as they take a lunch break whilst surveying some of their handiwork from the top of the tram. |
Steps to the children's play area had to be renewed. The task was begun last quarter but most of the donkey work was done during this current period. |
Why is it that stockists of materials often "nearly have" all you require - in this case we were a slab short of a complete set which delayed the completion of the work. |
Sporting new handrails, the task is completed and we can move on to something else..... |
.... like more steps: this time the ones used to assist passengers get into high railway coach doors. These steps had to be completely cleaned and burnished before anti-slip tape was hammered into place - very noisy and satisfying! |
Another little "just' job was to assemble this "heritage" (??) plastic storage shed to grace the station and hide some of the necessary but less attractive gear around the yard. |
The bonus of working around the railway is being in close proximity with trains. We pause to admire a Terrier entering the station area. |
On the other side of the signal box, the yard gates are given the tidy-up treatment. O.K. , they need replacing maybe, but a rubdown ..... |
.... and a good coat of paint will repel the wet and keep them going a bit longer we hope. |
Down at our Northiam base, Ron unites the notice board frames he has made with the the notice itself ready for a train ride to Tenterden. |
The notice is mounted on the buffer stops at Tenterden - itself a previous Tuesday Gang project. |
We returned to Tenterden during September to erect a new kissing gate to replace the existing interesting wooden structure. How do you do that we wondered? |
Having been handed the instructions, we found it was very straightforward apart from one thing. It hadn't rained for weeks and the clay was rock hard! |
What we lack in expertise, strength and technical knack we can usually replace with gaffer-power. (Somebody knows how to do it - somebody has the strength to do it - and somebody can brew the tea to keep us doing it!) Norman leads the way in excavating gate support post holes |
Job done and gates fully operational |
Back up the hill from the car-park to the Town station and some fencing to sort out |
Here we are at Northiam once again to complete some unfinished tasks - some dating back to Anika Rice's rebuilding. The retaining wall behind the main platform has been repaired and Humph applies a good coat of masonry paint whilst Dave caps off the tops of the concrete blocks to stop water penetration. |
Sorting out this topsy-turvy sleeper at the base of the wall is another "must" that Ron and Ian set about. |
Norman perseveres with another long overdue task completing the brick retaining wall behind the station buildings. |
Ferreting out the bricks scattered around the site, knocking up more mortar and barrowing in fresh materials falls to other members of the team as Norm continues to lay the bricks. This is another completed task now. |
