Northiam station sparkles in the sunshine in its new coats of paint. |
1. The Northiam No 1 cottage windows still display at this date, late spring charm. |
2. When nature does its own thing, it can be superb as here on a heap of waste soil which sprouted a spring bouquet all its own. |
3. Down to the graft of tidying and planting beds after the long and hard winter. Veronica gets stuck in. |
4. The Northiam picnic area perennials get spruced up with the aid of a pair of carefully aimed secateurs. |
5. The summer lawn still looking remarkably green despite the lack of rain after another ‘short back and sides’ applied by John and the station mower. |
6. The garden taking on that more traditional station look with veg mingling with the flowers. The service train bound for Bodiam stands in the platform- a reminder of the need to get the stations looking good for our passengers. |
7. Veronica and Ray share the chores today: Veronica wraps a hop tendril round the post again. |
8. The hedge is trimmed and the patch weeded to keep it looking spruce and from encroaching on the track, And then there are the rabbits and snails to think about - both perfect pests. |
9. Both sunshine and showers - and volunteers’ absence working at other places has led to healthy growth everywhere - especially of weeds and brambles and other unwanted elements. |
10. Whilst Veronica works away at Tenterden, Ray sorts out the Northiam patch again. |
11. The train arrives - a good moment to draw breath and admire the scene well back from the line. |
12. June colour brightens the scene and makes all the hard work seem worthwhile. |
13. Keeping pathways and grassed areas neat and tidy is a constant battle. Stan levels the rampant areas of vegetation so a mower can later subdue this area. |
14. The mower in hot (literally) pursuit with June temperatures hitting the 30’s. Not the day to be out in it but it’s Tuesday so we get on with it. |
15. Veronica waters the newly planted pots - a constant problem in hot weather unless other station staff take a turn with this when on duty. |
16. The new hedge at Northiam gets its turn with the clippers. The full extent is not quite visible but a fair job to get done to keep the platform looking neat. |
17. See picture 16 |
18. Sprucing up areas away from public gaze. Ray tidies up the hedging around the cottages - good for the knees! |
19. Tenterden garden in full summer bloom and alive with colour. |
20. Appreciating the lovely fragrances of June roses again at Tenterden. |
21. Back to Northiam and routine work - trimming the privet hedge round the picnic area. Ray and Richard get to work. |
